Student’s death in hit-and-run sparks protests

On Thursday night, a car struck a student in Dhaka's Mirpur ECB Chattar.

Shanto Hasan, a 10th grader at Adamjee Cantonment Public Schools, was killed in an accident. Protests erupted after the accident, which occurred at 9pm.

Because the driver was involved in an accident, several people chased the car. Shanto tried stopping the car, but the driver tried to avoid him and hit him. Md Asaduzzaman is deputy commissioner of Gulshan Division Police. At a hospital, he was declared dead.

Shaheen Md Amanullah, Sub-inspector at Cantonment Police Station, stated that they had arrested Shakil (26), from Uttara.

Local residents and classmates of the victim rushed to the scene to protest the death. This caused gridlock in the surrounding areas. Yesterday morning, they also created a human chain.

They claimed that the driver was being assisted by on-duty officers. After police assured them that they would arrest the driver, the protesters fled.

DC stated that they would investigate the allegation.

Josna Begum was the mother of Shanto. She said that her son, who went out to play Thursday afternoon, was supposed to return around 8pm.

She added, "We want justice."
